Mt Rushmore

The next stop on our trip was to Mt Rushmore National Memorial in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

We were planning to go during the day until a camp host at Devil’s Tower told us they just started doing an evening program in which they light up the monument. So we got there for the 8 pm show and were not disappointed.

The park ranger told us about the four presidents carved on the mountain and why they were chosen.

There showed a movie which told the history behind the carving. The original sculptor did not live to see it completed but his son took over.

It is an incredible achievement when you consider the working conditions that the 400 laborers had to endure. They had to hang off the side of the mountain to drill, blast and carve into solid granite rock.

About Rich Adventures with Rich and Tammy

We are Rich and Tammy. We met in a campground in 2012 and married 5 weeks later. We work-camped for many years and even took real jobs in LA for 3 years. Somewhere along the way we decided to buy a small place in Yuma, Arizona and settle down. After two years of wintering there and traveling in the summer we discovered that we are too young and active to spend much time in one place. So we have embarked on a 17 month road trip Tour of America in our Class C motorhome, and towing our Suzuki Sidekick. Along for the ride is our Cocker spaniel Charlie Brown.
